Candid Conversations: Protecting Your Creativity
In this Candid Conversation, an experienced panel talks about the concerns creators have about how their work is used. We will look at which fears deserve our attention and which might just be holding us back. Panelists from across disciplines and industries will talk about their own experiences protecting their work while exploring questions such as:
- Why do legal systems, contracts, international markets, and subcontracts work the way they do?
- What do I need to worry about and what can I stop staying up late about?
- What approaches are available to minimize risk while making sure the work gets seen?
- When do I need a contract and what should it say?
Following the panel discussion, join us for a session on knowledge mapping, networking and a guided conversation that digs deeper into the theme of protecting your creativity in a small-scale, intimate workshop.

Andrea Kalogiannides and Freddie Future—
Andreas Kalogiannides represents clients in business, commercial transactions, entertainment, real estate, and intellectual property. In his business, entertainment and intellectual property practice, Andreas is retained by creators, creative businesses and cultural institutions in regards to their business and legal affairs, which often includes drafting, review and negotiation of a wide variety of agreements in music, film and TV. Andreas also represents promoters and talent buyers in cross-border transactions for major Canadian and international tours.
There is a new voice rising from Toronto. Emerging from the scene that gave rise to DVSN, Majid Jordan and The Darcys, Freddie Future brings forward a fresh collision of indie pop and R n’ B that pulses with the funky heartbeat of city living. On his debut self-titled EP (due mid- 2019), Freddie breathes life into classic pop tropes of romance and heartbreak while driving lyricism and musicality in a direction few dare to take. His debut EP cements the evolution of an artist who’s honed his craft for years; Freddie Future isn’t from there, but he’s got his sights set on it.
Divya Shahani and DW Waterson—
Divya Shahani is an entertainment lawyer at Hall Webber LLP. Her practice focuses on entertainment, intellectual property, transactional and corporate matters. Having cut her teeth on the business side of the entertainment industry as a head hunter and an executive producer, Divya’s legal advice to her entertainment clients is informed by business strategy and practical realities.
Director, DJ and drummer D.W. Waterson is most known for her award-winning digital series THAT’S MY DJ and her live shows that combine DJing dance anthems with live drum solos.
