What does it take to have a life in music?

There are many “how-to” guides that explore the inner workings of the music business and outline important steps for success, from recording songs to growing a social media following. But these steps are only half of the equation. Many sources offer excellent content but are often missing important context.

In this workshop Professor of Media Noah Schwartz explores music by placing it in context: historical, philosophical, technological, personal, and cultural. Through these explorations, you will learn how music as an art and industry got to where it is today, where it may be going, and how you can find your place. Noah will be joined by Cormac McGee, coordinator of Ryerson University’s Music Den and artist manager at ArtHaus.

About the Speaker:
Noah Schwartz’s winding journey through music, media and design is typical of creativity in the 21st century. As a young guitarist at Berklee College of Music, he experienced music’s digital upheaval, and how multifaceted musicians and entrepreneurs were best prepared to thrive in it. From there, Schwartz worked on many sides of the industry — including artists and bands, record labels and music technology companies. Today, he’s the Interim Director of Ryerson University’s new Bachelor of Fine Arts in Professional Music, translating his experiences and lessons learned for university students and developing the next generation of musicians and creative professionals. Schwartz holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Music from Berklee College of Music, a Master’s in Media Production from Ryerson University, and is currently a PhD candidate at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto.
